Math Concepts

Math Concepts is a CBT program for teaching math. The program consists of two parts: lessons for the 4th, 5th and 6th grades (Math Concepts 456) and lessons for the 7th, 8th and 9th grades (Math Concepts 789).
The program was designed as a plug-in for Orchard Manager - application that manages registration of users, organizes them into classes, stores the results reported by the program for every user, and allows the teacher to view/print the results for each student.

Math Concepts 456 is split into several parts. Each part contains lessons from some branch of mathematics. Every lesson consists of a series of interactive screens explaining a particular topic, and providing examples and basic exercises. As the program is designed for children, it has a lot of graphics and animations helping to explain various mathematical concepts.
Math Concepts 456 contains exercises and tests for each topic covered. Student can do the exercises and try to solve a set of problems. Data is selected at random. If a student has problems with solving some particular exercise he can view the correct answer and try a similar problem again. After some practice he can take a test. He solves tasks similar to those practiced during the lessons, and gets a mark for the test. The results of the test are reported to Orchard Manager so that the teacher can check them later.
There is also a set of mathematical games and puzzles for each topic. These games involve solving simple problems and completing logical, geometrical etc. tasks.

Math Concepts 789 is designed for older children. It contains less animation and more difficult material, but still it is very convenient for using and learning. Like Math Concepts 456 it is split into eight mathematical topics such as Algebra, Geometry, Probability Theory etc. Each topic includes a set of lessons for different grades. Lesson consists of three main parts: the lesson itself, exercises and test.
Each lesson in Math Concepts 789 is a series of interactive screens explaining mathematical concepts and formulas. Practice section contains a set of tasks for students to do. The same problem can be solved several times with different data. If a student fails to solve some problem the correct answer with explanation is shown. The test consists of tasks similar to the practiced exercises but here the results are recorded and reported to Orchard Manager.

The program has well-developed navigation to make learning comfortable. User can easily move back and forward, to the beginning and to the end of the lesson, or to a particular screen.
The program stores navigation history, so user can return to previous steps. The program also stores a bookmark for every user, so when a student leaves the program and returns later he is taken to the same place in the lesson and can continue studying or practicing. There is also a built-in calculator, help system and journal where students can write their own notes and ideas.
The program was rewritten in Authorware 4 based on previous versions. The functionality of the program was largely enhanced. It contains more than 100,000 icons and uses more than 80 external functions.
